What is the weather like in the Norwegian fjords?
Rain, temperatures and changing weather from the coast to the inner fjords.
Short answer
Fjord weather depends on the distance from the open sea: coastal Bergen gets nearly five times as much precipitation as Lærdal, near the head of the Sognefjord. Summers are mild, with July normals near 16 °C in both places, while the inner fjords have colder winters. The weather changes often, so bring rain gear and layers.
Why
- The 1991–2020 precipitation normals on yr.no add up to 2,496 mm a year for Bergen (Florida) and 515 mm for Lærdal.
- Lærdal lies near the head of the Sognefjord, where the mountains create a rain shadow that makes it much drier than the coast.
- January normals are 2.6 °C in Bergen and −0.7 °C in Lærdal, while the July normals are 15.6 °C and 15.9 °C.
Details
Visit Norway says the weather in Fjord Norway is constantly changing and that you may get rain, sun, wind and even snow in the same day. Inner fjords can get hot in summer, and Lærdal reached 32.3 °C on 22 July 2025. In the cold season, from October to April, Visit Norway warns that icy roads, snow and darkness can make driving challenging.
Tip
Check the Yr forecast for each fjord village on your route, not only for Bergen, as the weather inside a fjord can be very different from the coast.
What may differ
Mountain roads between the fjords are a separate matter: Yr's mountain pass page shows whether roads such as Fv. 55 Sognefjellet and Fv. 63 Trollstigen are open, so check it before you drive.
Common misconception
It always rains in the Norwegian fjords.
What actually happens
Rain is heaviest near the coast. Lærdal, deep inside the Sognefjord, has a precipitation normal of 515 mm a year, about a fifth of Bergen's 2,496 mm.
