When does winter start in Norway?
When autumn turns to winter, which months count, and how it differs by region.
Short answer
Winter in Norway usually begins in mid-to-late November, though it can come as early as October, especially in the north, inland and in the mountains. December to February are the core winter months. In Bergen the monthly normal stays above freezing all winter, while in Karasjok in Finnmark it is below zero from October to April.
Why
- Visit Norway says autumn can give way to winter as early as October, but more often in mid-to-late November, and that rain sometimes turns to snow in the mountains in early November.
- Yr's 1991–2020 normals show the monthly mean falling below zero in October in Karasjok (−0.9 °C), while Bergen stays above freezing, at 2.3 °C even in February.
- From mid-November to the end of January, the sun does not rise, or only briefly, in most of Northern Norway, according to Visit Norway.
Details
Visit Norway describes September to November as autumn and March to May as spring, which leaves December to February as the core winter months. For driving, Visit Norway treats October to April as the cold season, when you and your car need to be prepared. The lower inland areas of Finnmark, Troms, Trøndelag and Eastern Norway often have very cold winters with lots of snow, while the coast usually stays around zero.
Tip
If you drive between October and April, check that your rental car has winter tyres and plan for icy roads and short days.
What may differ
Winters are getting shorter: MET Norway expects a shorter ski season over most of the country, with Tromsø falling from about 4.5 months of skiing conditions today to about one month by the end of the century if high emissions continue.
