Where can I see snow in winter near Oslo?
Snow in the hills above Oslo, ski slopes, sledging and an indoor option.
Short answer
When the city centre has little snow, the hills around Holmenkollen and Tryvann above Oslo are often white and only about 20 minutes away by metro or bus. Skimore Oslo at Tryvann has alpine slopes, and there are prepared ski trails nearby. You can rent a sledge for Korketrekkeren, a 2 km run that ends at Midtstuen metro stop.
Why
- Yr's 1991–2020 normals give January −3.5 °C at Tryvannshøgda (514 m) against −2.3 °C at Blindern (94 m) in the city.
- Tryvannshøgda also gets more precipitation: its normals for December to February add up to 245 mm, against 158 mm at Blindern.
- Visit Norway notes that Oslo winters vary a lot, from lots of snow to no snow at all in the centre, while the hills around the city are often white.
Details
Skimore Oslo, at Tryvannsveien 64, describes itself as about 25 minutes from the city centre and runs the Tryvann and Wyller slopes. Visit Norway says it is easy and common to take skis on public transport, and that you can rent or borrow skis if you have none. When the weather lets you down, Visit Norway suggests the SNØ indoor ski centre just outside Oslo.
Tip
A bare city centre says little about the hills, so check opening hours at Skimore Oslo and the forecast for Tryvann before you give up on snow.
What may differ
Snow cover changes a lot from year to year and month to month. In winter 2025/26, Yr recorded a snow depth of 71 cm at Tryvannshøgda on 23 February 2026.
