How to choose a shop: on your way or close to home
- Decide first where it suits you to shop: by the central station, in the city centre or in your own neighbourhood.
- A shop that opens on Sunday has a sales area of up to 100 square metres: buy what you need now and leave the big shop for a weekday.
- Go by the address on the card, not by the chain name on the sign: each shop has its own Sunday hours, and you check them with the shop.
- This page is not a complete list: the rest of the shops are in the catalogue.
The groups are split by where you are coming from. «By the central station and in the city centre» is for those who arrive by train or bus at Jernbanetorget, or who are staying at a hotel in the centre: you drop in on your way. «In the neighbourhoods around the centre» is for those who live or rent in Grünerløkka, near Bislett or in Kampen and do not want to travel into the centre for a litre of milk.
The municipality puts it plainly in its guide for newcomers: most grocery stores are closed on Sundays and public holidays, and only some kiosks and independent shops stay open. The law also sets a limit on size, so a shop that opens on Sunday is smaller than the supermarket you may be used to.
All grocery stores in the city, including those not listed here, are in the catalogue category for grocery stores and supermarkets. Districts and transport are described on the Oslo page.
What to check before you leave home
- Sunday hours: check them with the shop on the day, and on public holidays check the shop's own website as well.
- «Open round the clock» does not always mean «staffed»: at night the door may open with a bank card or a mobile phone.
- Beer is not sold in shops on Sundays.
- Christmas Eve and the Saturdays before Easter Sunday and Whit Sunday: ordinary shops close at 16:00, and the small shops need a separate check.
Sunday hours differ from shop to shop. Some open early in the morning and others later, some close in the evening, and a few stay open round the clock. A chain can change the hours, and public holidays often have hours of their own. So check the opening hours with the shop itself on the day you plan to go: the phone number is on the card.
Some of the round-the-clock shops are unstaffed for part of the night. One of the chains describes it like this: you let yourself in with a bank card or a mobile phone, scan your items yourself at the self-service checkout and scan the receipt on the way out. The chain does not say whether foreign cards work: if you are visiting, a staffed shop is the safer choice.
Beer is sold in the city's grocery stores from 08:00 to 20:00 on weekdays and from 08:00 to 18:00 on Saturdays. On Sundays and public holidays, and also on 1 and 17 May, beer is not sold at all: this is set by Oslo municipality. It also applies in shops that stay open all night.
Why only small shops are open on Sundays
- Under Norway's public holidays act, shops stay closed on Sundays.
- The exception covers kiosks and grocery stores with a sales area of up to 100 square metres.
- On the last three Sundays before Christmas, all shops may open from 14:00 to 20:00.
Norway's public holidays act (helligdagsfredloven) requires permanent shops to stay closed on public holidays, and ordinary Sundays count as such. Kiosks and grocery stores with a sales area of up to 100 square metres are exempt. That is why the small shops are open while the large supermarkets are closed on Sundays.
A second exception covers places approved as typical tourist areas: the rule does not apply there.
Once a year the rule gives way: on the last three Sundays before Christmas, all shops may open from 14:00 to 20:00. For Sunday opening across the whole country, including pharmacies and petrol stations, see the article on Sunday opening at the bottom of the page.
