How fast can I drive with a caravan or trailer in Norway?
80 km/h with a trailer, Tempo 100 and licence weight limits.
Short answer
With a caravan or trailer, the maximum speed in Norway is 80 km/h, even on motorways with a higher limit, unless the trailer has Tempo 100 approval. The old 60 km/h limit for trailers without brakes was scrapped in March 2022. Where signs show a lower limit, that limit applies.
Why
- The Ministry of Transport changed the rules on 11 March 2022 so that all trailers can be towed at 80 km/h, including those without brakes, which were previously limited to 60 km/h.
- Statens vegvesen's advice for visiting drivers states that a car towing a caravan has a speed limit of 80 km/h on motorways.
- Statens vegvesen can issue a Tempo 100 certificate after approving a trailer that meets special technical requirements, and such trailers must pass the regular EU roadworthiness test.
Details
Tempo 100 trailers need, among other things, hydraulic shock absorbers and a stabilising coupling, their tyres may not be more than six years old, and the car and trailer together must be suited to the speed. With a class B licence you can tow a trailer with a permitted total weight of up to 750 kg, or a heavier one if car and trailer together weigh no more than 3,500 kg. Motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes are also limited to 80 km/h on motorways.
Tip
Check the registration document or rental contract for how much the car may tow before you hitch up, and if a queue builds up behind you, pull into a bus stop or car park to let traffic pass.
What may differ
Tempo 100 is an approval issued by Statens vegvesen after it has approved the trailer; without it, keep to 80 km/h. The weight you may tow depends on your licence: code 96 allows car and trailer up to 4,250 kg in total, and class BE trailers up to 3,500 kg.
Common misconception
Trailers without brakes are limited to 60 km/h in Norway.
What actually happens
That rule was removed on 11 March 2022; all trailers in proper condition can now be towed at up to 80 km/h where the road allows it.
