Which mountain roads in Norway are closed in winter?
Winter-closed scenic routes and winter conditions on the main passes.
Short answer
Mountain roads that close for the whole winter include Trollstigen, Sognefjellet, Valdresflye and Gamle Strynefjellsvegen, which are all Norwegian Scenic Routes. Other mountain crossings, such as the E6 over Saltfjellet, stay open in winter but can close for periods in bad weather. The dates vary from year to year, so check the Statens vegvesen traffic map before you go.
Why
- Trollstigen has closed between 5 October and 7 December in previous years, and the road from Langvatnet to Geiranger between 18 November and 9 January.
- Nasjonale turistveger states that Sognefjellet is closed in winter between Rustasætre/Vegaskjelet and Turtagrø, and Valdresflye between Garli and Maurvangen.
- Gamle Strynefjellsvegen between Grotli and Videsæter closes earliest of these roads, with previous closures between 15 September and 11 October.
Details
Sognefjellet has previously closed between 17 November and 17 December, and Valdresflye between 15 December and 9 January. These dates come from earlier seasons and shift with snow and weather. Main roads over the mountains can also close many times in one winter: in March 2020 Statens vegvesen reported that the E6 over Saltfjellet in Nordland had been closed 51 times that winter.
Tip
On each route page at nasjonaleturistveger.no, click the snow icon on the map to see the closure information for that scenic route.
What may differ
After a road opens in spring, it may still be closed for a period at night and in bad weather.
