Can I pay for EV charging in Norway with a bank card?
The card payment rule for fast chargers and what to do elsewhere.
Short answer
You can pay by bank card at new fast chargers in Norway, because all new charging points of 50 kW or more must accept card payment. The rule covers points ordered after 1 July 2023, not older or slower chargers, where you may need the operator's app or an account.
Why
- The Ministry of Transport announced on 30 June 2023 that card payment would be required at all new charging points that operators order after 1 July.
- In the first stage the requirement applies only to new charging posts with an output of 50 kW or more.
- Visit Norway counts more than 17,000 charging stations and 3,300 rapid chargers in the country and advises registering with the major providers, usually through an app.
Details
At older fast chargers and normal chargers, payment often goes through the operator's app or a customer account, so install the apps of the main operators on your route before you leave. Visit Norway also notes that hotels increasingly offer charging, sometimes for free.
Tip
Bring a bank card and set up one or two operator apps with payment before the trip, so a charger without a card reader does not leave you stuck.
What may differ
Electric cars with foreign plates cannot use parking spaces and other facilities reserved for EVs: Visit Norway says Norwegian registration plates are required for that.
