How do I apply for a Schengen visa to Norway?
Steps, fees, timing and processing time.
Short answer
You apply for a Norwegian visitor visa online on the UDI website, pay the fee online and then attend an appointment at a visa application centre. The fee is EUR 90 for adults, and you apply between six months and 15 days before the trip. Processing normally takes 15 days but can be extended to 45.
Why
- Apply to Norway if it is your only or main destination: with several Schengen countries, you apply to the one where you will spend the longest time, or to the first one if the stays are equal.
- UDI charges EUR 90 for adults and children over 12 and EUR 45 for children aged 6 to 12, while children under 6 pay no fee.
- UDI gives 15 days as the usual waiting time when the embassy in your country of residence handles the case, and 45 days when the application goes to UDI.
Details
At the appointment you hand in the documents on the embassy's checklist for your country and give your fingerprints, and VFS Global then forwards the application to the embassy or consulate. The application centre charges its own service fee on top of the visa fee. You need valid travel insurance and a passport that is valid for at least three months after your visit and was issued within the last ten years.
Tip
Before you book the appointment, download the embassy's checklist for the country where you live and bring every document on it.
What may differ
In some countries another Schengen state handles visas on Norway's behalf, and you then follow that country's procedure. Close family members of EU/EEA citizens who travel with or visit them pay no visa fee, and citizens of visa-free countries need no visa for short visits.
Common misconception
You need a separate visa for Norway if you already have a Schengen visa from another country.
What actually happens
A Schengen visitor visa is valid for entry to all Schengen countries, including Norway, as long as you keep within its dates and number of days.
