What documents do I need to travel to Norway?
Passport, ID card, visa and other papers for a trip to Norway.
Short answer
Travellers from outside the EU/EEA need a valid passport, and many also need a Schengen visa. The passport must be issued within the last 10 years and valid for at least three months after you leave. EU/EEA citizens can use a passport or national ID card, and Nordic citizens arriving from another Nordic country need no passport.
Why
- The passport rules come from the Schengen Borders Code, which requires a travel document issued within the previous 10 years and valid for at least three months after departure.
- UDI says visitors should normally have NOK 500 for each day of their stay and may be asked to prove it when they enter the Schengen Area.
- Since 10 April 2026 the Entry/Exit System (EES) has replaced passport stamps and records the fingerprints and facial image of visitors from outside the EU.
Details
Citizens of visa-free countries such as the US, the UK and Canada need no visa for stays of up to 90 days, only a passport that meets these rules. Keep proof of funds at hand, such as cash, bank cards or confirmation of prepaid accommodation and transport, and be ready to show that you can travel back home. ETIAS, a planned online travel authorisation for visa-free travellers, is not in operation yet, so you do not need it for now.
Tip
Check the issue date in your passport, not only the expiry date: a passport issued more than 10 years ago does not meet the Schengen entry rules even if it has not expired.
What may differ
Nordic citizens are still advised to carry a passport or national ID card, because only these documents prove citizenship during temporary border controls, and airlines may ask for ID. Everyone must show a valid passport or ID document when travelling to and from Svalbard.
Common misconception
A passport only needs to be valid on the day you arrive in Norway.
What actually happens
For travellers from outside the EU/EEA, the passport must be valid for at least three months after the date you plan to leave and issued within the last 10 years.
