Do I need ETIAS to travel to Norway, and when does it start?
Status, who will need it, fee and validity.
Short answer
Travellers to Norway do not need ETIAS yet, because the system is not in operation and no start date has been announced. When it starts, citizens of visa-free countries such as the US will need it, while EU/EEA citizens will not. The fee will be EUR 20, and the start date will be announced months in advance.
Why
- The Norwegian Police (Politiet) state that ETIAS is not in operation and that no applications are being collected.
- ETIAS is not a visa but an electronic pre-screening linked to your passport, and holding one does not guarantee entry.
- Applicants under 18 or over 70 will pay no fee, and an authorisation will be valid for up to three years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first.
Details
Once ETIAS starts, you will apply through one official online form, and most applications are expected to be processed within minutes. EES, the border registration system, is a separate system and has been in full operation since 10 April 2026.
Tip
Do not pay any website for ETIAS now: Politiet warns about unofficial ETIAS sites, and there is only one official ETIAS website.
What may differ
EU/EEA citizens, including Norwegians, will not need ETIAS. Travellers who need a Schengen visa will keep applying for a visa, since ETIAS is for nationals of visa-free countries.
Common misconception
You must already apply for ETIAS before travelling to Norway.
What actually happens
ETIAS is not in operation and no applications are collected, so websites that sell ETIAS now are not official.
