Do I need a passport to travel to Norway?
Passport, ID card and the Nordic exception.
Short answer
Travellers from outside the EU/EEA need a valid passport to enter Norway, while EU/EEA citizens can use a passport or a national ID card. Nordic citizens travelling from another Nordic country need no passport, although carrying a passport or ID card is recommended. Airlines may refuse boarding if your documents are not in order.
Why
- For citizens of countries outside the EU, EEA and Nordic region, the passport must generally be valid for at least three months after the planned departure date, and most also need a visa.
- Citizens of EU, EEA and Schengen countries must carry a passport or national ID card that shows their citizenship.
- When Nordic countries have temporary border controls, only a passport or a national ID card can be used to document citizenship.
Details
Even when no passport is required, airlines and transport companies can have their own ID requirements, so check with them before you travel. Children travelling with their parents from another Nordic country need no passport either, but the transport company may require ID for all passengers.
Tip
Bring a passport or national ID card even within the Nordic region, because only these two documents prove your citizenship at a border check.
What may differ
The rules follow your citizenship, not where you live. Svalbard is outside Schengen, so everyone, including Norwegians and other Nordic citizens, must show a valid passport or ID document on the way there and back.
