How long must my passport be valid to enter Norway?
The three-month rule, the ten-year rule and who they apply to.
Short answer
Travellers from outside the EU/EEA need a passport valid for at least three months after the date they plan to leave Norway. It must also have been issued within the previous ten years, so an old passport can fail the rule even before it expires. EU/EEA citizens can use a passport or national ID card.
Why
- UDI requires visa-free visitors to hold a passport valid for at least three months longer than the date they plan to leave Norway.
- For visa applicants, UDI requires a passport valid for at least three months after the end of the visit and issued within the last ten years.
- Info Norden describes the three-month rule as the general requirement for citizens of countries outside the EU, EEA and Nordic region.
Details
Count the three months from the last day of your stay, not from your arrival: for a trip that ends on 1 June, the passport should be valid until at least 1 September. Airlines may deny boarding if your documents are not in order.
Tip
Check both dates in your passport before you book: the expiry date and the date of issue.
What may differ
Nordic citizens travelling from another Nordic country need no passport at all, and EU/EEA citizens can use a national ID card instead of a passport.
Common misconception
A passport only needs to be valid on the day you arrive.
What actually happens
Travellers from outside the EU/EEA need at least three months of validity after the planned departure, and the passport must have been issued within the last ten years.
