How much does electricity cost in Norway?

Average household price, state support and Norgespris.

Answered at: Checked at:

Short answer

In the second quarter of 2026, Norwegian households paid an average of 173 øre per kWh including grid rent and taxes, or 118 øre after state support. Of this, the power itself cost 100.1 øre, grid rent 33.9 øre and taxes 39.2 øre. The price differs between Norway's five price areas, and many households now pay the fixed Norgespris.

Why

  1. Statistics Norway (SSB) reports that state support averaged 55.3 øre per kWh in the second quarter of 2026, up from 4.8 øre in the same quarter of 2025.
  2. With Norgespris, households pay a fixed 40 øre per kWh excluding VAT for the power itself until 31 December 2026, for up to 5,000 kWh a month, and grid rent and taxes come on top.
  3. Under the ordinary support scheme in 2026, the state covers 90 per cent of the spot price above 77 øre per kWh excluding VAT, for up to 5,000 kWh a month.

Details

In the second quarter of 2026, the spot price in the southern price areas (NO1, NO2 and NO5) was more than three times as high as in Northern Norway (NO4), according to SSB. Households choose either Norgespris or the ordinary support scheme. Norgespris must be ordered from your grid company and chosen again for each new year.

Tip

Before you choose Norgespris, ask your grid company what grid rent you pay, because grid rent and taxes are added to the fixed 40 øre.

What may differ

Cabins have a lower Norgespris cap of 1,000 kWh a month. Uptake also varies by region: at the end of June 2026, about 82 per cent of household consumption in NO2 was on Norgespris, while the share in NO4 was very low.

Common misconception

Electricity is cheap everywhere in Norway.

What actually happens

The price depends on the price area. In the second quarter of 2026, the spot price in southern Norway was more than three times as high as in Northern Norway, and the state paid an average of 55.3 øre per kWh in support.
