Are train tickets more expensive in Norway than in Sweden?

Price levels, VAT on tickets and sample fares.

Answered at: Checked at:

Short answer

Transport as a whole cost almost 15 per cent more in Norway than in Sweden in 2025, according to Eurostat figures published by Statistics Norway. The figure covers the whole transport group, not only trains. One clear difference is VAT: Norway charges 12 per cent on passenger transport, Sweden 6 per cent.

How to save on transport in Norway a wallet with a few Norwegian krone coins, a receipt and a small price tag in front of a mountain silhouette

Why

  1. Eurostat's 2025 price level index for transport, published by Statistics Norway, is 132.1 for Norway and 115.1 for Sweden, with the EU at 100.
  2. In Norway, passenger transport has a reduced VAT rate of 12 per cent, while the Swedish Tax Agency sets 6 per cent VAT on passenger transport by train within Sweden.
  3. Overall, Swedish prices were just under 6 per cent lower than Norwegian prices in 2025, down from about 8.5 per cent in 2024.

Details

Because the index covers the whole transport group, it shows the general level rather than the price of a single ticket. The exchange rate also matters: Statistics Norway notes that a stronger krone raised Norway's price level in 2025. As an example of a Norwegian fare, Vy sells tickets from Oslo to Bergen from NOK 359; to compare a specific trip, look up the same date and time of day with Vy or Entur and with the Swedish operators.

Tip

Use Vy's low fare calendar to find the cheapest day, and compare trips of the same length and date at the same exchange rate before deciding which country is cheaper.

What may differ

Price differences vary by route, how early you book and which discounts you qualify for, such as fares for children, students or seniors.
