How much does a train ticket cost in Norway?
Lowest fares, ticket types and discounts on Norwegian trains.
Short answer
Vy advertises train tickets from NOK 359 for Oslo to Bergen and from NOK 249 for Oslo to Fredrikstad, with the lowest fares for early bookings. Children get 75 per cent off single tickets on long-distance and regional trains, and students get 50 per cent. Buying a ticket on board costs extra.
Why
- Long-distance trains are run by Vy, Go-Ahead Nordic and SJ NORD, and Entur sells tickets at the operators' own prices without a surcharge.
- Lowfare tickets are cheapest when booked early, while Flex tickets let you change the departure time but cannot be combined with student or senior discounts.
- The discounts on long-distance and regional trains rose on 1 October 2024 to 75 per cent on single tickets for children and 50 per cent for students, and SJ NORD still lists these rates in October 2026.
Details
The cheapest tickets are usually non-refundable, so a Flex ticket suits you better if your plans may change. SJ NORD gives 75 per cent off to children aged 6 to 17, 50 per cent to students under 30 and 50 per cent to travellers aged 67 or over on its Standard Flexible tickets. Vy's low fare calendar shows which days have the lowest prices on a route.
Tip
Use the low fare calendar on vy.no or compare prices on Entur, and book as early as you can if you want the cheapest seats.
What may differ
Short trips inside the Ruter, Skyss, AtB and Kolumbus areas, such as Oslo to Lillestrøm, already have lower local fares, and the national discounts for children and students do not apply there.
