How much does a trip to Norway from the US cost?

Flights, the UDI daily minimum and prices on the ground.

Short answer

A trip to Norway from the US costs your flight plus daily spending, and UDI requires visitors to have at least NOK 500 for each day. That is a minimum for entry, not a full budget. A direct flight from New York to Oslo takes about 7.5 hours, and a 24-hour Oslo Pass costs NOK 580.

Why

  1. Visit Norway says there are direct flights to Norway from the east coast of the US, and the flight from New York to Oslo takes about 7.5 hours.
  2. US citizens can visit Norway and the rest of the Schengen area without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, according to UDI.
  3. On the flight home, the fare includes Norway's air passenger tax, which Skatteetaten lists at NOK 350 per passenger for final destinations outside Europe.

Details

In Oslo, an adult single ticket for one zone on Ruter's public transport costs NOK 46. The 24-hour Oslo Pass includes public transport and free entry to more than 30 museums and attractions. For longer trips, Vy advertises train tickets from Oslo to Bergen from NOK 359 for early bookings. Since 10 April 2026, the Entry/Exit System (EES) records your fingerprints and photo at the Schengen border.

Tip

Book the flight first, then price each day separately: accommodation, transport, entry tickets and meals, using the providers' own websites for your dates.

What may differ

UDI's NOK 500 per day is a minimum that the border police can check; real spending depends on where you stay, how you travel and where in Norway you go.

Common misconception

Americans must apply for ETIAS before visiting Norway.

What actually happens

ETIAS is not in operation yet, and the Norwegian Police say no applications are collected. The start date will be announced several months in advance.
