Where is it forbidden to fly a drone in Norway?
Airports, central Oslo, protected areas and how to check the map.
Short answer
You may not fly a drone in Norway within 5 km of an airport without permission, or over or near military areas, prisons and embassies. Central Oslo lies in restricted area R102, where you need permission from the Civil Aviation Authority. Most protected areas, such as nature reserves, ban drones, and you must keep away from ongoing rescue operations.
Why
- The zones are set by the Civil Aviation Authority (Luftfartstilsynet), and flying closer than 5 km to an airport requires permission from the air traffic service.
- Protected areas have their own protection regulations, and the County Governor (Statsforvalteren) in Nordland says drone use is banned in most of them, with exemptions only for good reasons.
- Temporary restricted areas are published as NOTAM notices, so a place that was open yesterday can be closed today.
Details
Check the official map of drone zones at dronesoner.no and the NOTAM notices at ippc.no before every flight. Visitors who are registered as drone operators in their home country in the EU or EEA can fly on that registration, while others can register at flydrone.no. In the open category the drone must stay within 120 m of the ground and within your sight. You also need permission from the landowner where you take off and land.
Tip
Open dronesoner.no on the day you fly, not only when you plan the trip, because temporary zones can appear at short notice.
What may differ
Distance rules depend on the drone: a drone over 250 g without C1 marking must stay at least 30 m from other people and 150 m from populated and recreational areas. Russian operators may not fly drones in Norwegian airspace.
