Is Norwegian Air a safe airline?
Who certifies and supervises Norwegian, what it flies and how its aircraft are maintained.
Short answer
Norwegian is a certified airline supervised by Norway's Civil Aviation Authority under the same European safety rules that apply to airlines across the EU and EEA. Its fleet consists only of Boeing 737 aircraft, maintained under EASA regulations. The airline analyses flight recorder data to check that its aircraft are flown within the rules.
Why
- The Civil Aviation Authority of Norway lists Norwegian Air Shuttle AOC AS among the airlines it has approved with an air operator certificate (AOC).
- Norway is a member of the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and shares the common EU aviation safety rules, and the Civil Aviation Authority supervises commercial air transport companies.
- Norwegian audits every maintenance supplier before it starts working for the airline and keeps monitoring it afterwards.
Details
Norwegian was founded in 1993 and has operated as a low-cost carrier with Boeing 737 aircraft since 2002. It currently holds two operational air operator certificates, through Norwegian Air Shuttle in Norway and Norwegian Air Sweden. In March 2019 Norwegian suspended flights with its Boeing 737 MAX following recommendations by European aviation authorities, as the type was grounded worldwide; EASA declared the 737 MAX safe to return to service in January 2021.
Tip
Listen to the safety briefing and keep your seat belt fastened while you are seated, as on any other airline.
Common misconception
Low-cost airlines like Norwegian save money on safety.
What actually happens
Low fares do not change the rules: Norwegian maintains its aircraft under the same EASA regulations as other European airlines and is supervised by the Civil Aviation Authority of Norway.
