Is Tromsø safe for tourists?
Crime figures, winter conditions and safe ways to see the northern lights.
Short answer
Tromsø is generally safe for tourists: the city has slightly fewer reported offences per resident than Norway as a whole, according to Statistics Norway. The bigger risks come from nature. Visit Tromsø advises against winter hiking if you lack experience of snow, ice and steep terrain, and in midwinter the sun does not rise at all.
Why
- Statistics Norway's table 08487 gives an annual average for 2024 and 2025 of 58.6 reported offences per 1,000 residents in Tromsø, slightly below the national average for the same period.
- UK travel advice describes the risk of petty theft in Norway as small and names airports and railway stations in and around Oslo, not Tromsø, as the main places.
- Tromsø lies on a small island 350 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle, and on 21 December the sun does not rise there at all.
Details
Winter is peak season in Tromsø because of the northern lights, and they can often be seen from downtown, for example at Telegrafbukta on the southern tip of the island. Before a mountain trip, check the avalanche risk on Varsom and follow the Norwegian Mountain Code: be prepared for bad weather and cold, even on short trips, and turn back in time. In an emergency call 112; for non-urgent police matters call 02800.
Tip
If you have no winter mountain experience, see the northern lights from the city or join a guided tour instead of hiking or driving into the mountains on your own.
What may differ
In summer the picture changes: Tromsø has midnight sun from 20 May to 22 July, and the risks of cold and darkness fall away, although the weather in the mountains can still change quickly.
