Short answer

Most reported crime in Oslo happens in the inner city, where six in ten offences reported in 2023 took place, according to the City of Oslo. Sentrum had the largest share of reported thefts, and Gamle Oslo, which includes Grønland, stood out for drug and public order offences. Across Oslo, Statistics Norway counted 103 offences per 1,000 inhabitants in 2025.

Why

  1. The City of Oslo's figures for 2023 show that Sentrum, St. Hanshaugen and Frogner were the scene of 19, 14 and 12 per cent of the property thefts reported in Oslo.
  2. Among the inner-city districts, Gamle Oslo had the largest share of reported drug offences (19 per cent of the Oslo total) and public order offences (18 per cent) in 2023.
  3. Oslo police describe Storgata, Brugata, Vaterland, Urtegata and the area along the Akerselva river as the city's largest open drug scene, which brings crime such as serious violence and disorder.

Details

The City of Oslo points out that 40 per cent of Oslo's residents live in the inner city and that most of the nightlife is there too. In 2025 Oslo had 43.0 reported property thefts per 1,000 inhabitants against 20.8 for Norway, and 13.0 cases of violence against 8.5. US travel advice says violent crime in Norway is rare but occurs in areas with drug trafficking and gang problems, including parts of eastern Oslo.

Tip

Keep your phone and bag close at Oslo Central Station, which US travel advice names as a popular area for pickpockets, and call 02800 to report a crime that is not urgent.

What may differ

Counted by where victims live rather than where offences happen, the pattern changes: in 2023 the most residents exposed to violence in their own district were in Søndre Nordstrand, 9 per 1,000, followed by Stovner with 7.
