Is Oslo safe to walk around at night?
Travel advice, Oslo police on nightlife and services open all night.
Short answer
US travel advice says violent crime in Norway is uncommon and names Oslo Central Station as a popular area for pickpockets and bag snatchers. Oslo police say most of the city's nightlife is in the centre and that it gives room for theft, disorder and violence. Call 112 for the police or 116 117 for the emergency clinic.
Why
- The US State Department's country page says Norway has a low level of crime and that the most common crimes are burglaries and petty thefts.
- In its threat assessment for 2025, Oslo police write that nightlife gives room for crime such as disorder, acquisitive crime and violence, and that the largest share of Oslo's nightlife is in the city centre.
- Statistics Norway's 2023 survey found that 6.9 per cent of people in Norway had recently worried about violence or threats when walking alone where they live.
Details
Oslo police district, which also covers Asker and Bærum, received 7 per cent more reports of theft from the person, which largely means pickpocketing, in 2024 than in 2023.
