Are there pickpockets or tourist scams in Norway?

Where theft happens, the police numbers and how to report as a visitor.

Answered at: Checked at:

Short answer

Pickpocketing does happen in Norway, mainly at airports and railway stations in and around Oslo, but UK travel advice describes the risk of petty theft as small. Keep your phone and wallet out of reach in crowds. If something is stolen, call 02800 for help reporting it, or 112 in an emergency.

Why

  1. The UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office says there is a small risk of petty theft, particularly at airports and railway stations in and around Oslo.
  2. The Norwegian Police ask you to call 02800 for help to report crimes and incidents, and 112 if someone is in immediate danger.
  3. Theft and fraud can be reported online at anmeldelse.politiet.no, but only with an electronic ID such as BankID, MinID, Buypass ID or Commfides.

Details

Most visitors do not have a Norwegian electronic ID, so the usual route is to call 02800 or go to a police station. On politiet.no you can find the nearest station by place name or postcode, with opening hours and contact details. If you have been the victim of a crime, the Støttesenter for kriminalutsatte (support centre for victims of crime) can be reached on 800 40 008.

Tip

At Oslo Central Station and Oslo Airport, keep your phone and wallet in a closed inside pocket or bag, especially when you are busy with tickets and luggage.
