How rough is the sea along the Norwegian coast?
Stad, waves, storm days and where to check the sea forecast.
Short answer
Conditions vary with the weather, but the sea off Stad is the most weather-exposed and dangerous stretch along the Norwegian coast, according to the Norwegian Coastal Administration (Kystverket). Currents and the seabed there make waves complex, and heavy seas can linger for days after the wind drops. A ship tunnel through Stad is due to start construction in early 2027.
Why
- Kystverket says the combination of ocean currents and underwater topography off Stad creates especially complex and unpredictable wave conditions, and very high waves can come from different directions at once.
- Kråkenes lighthouse near Stad is the weather station with the most storm days, between 45 and 106 a year, according to Kystverket.
- The planned Stad ship tunnel, 1.7 kilometres long, is meant to make sailing past Stad safer and more predictable.
Details
Kystverket notes that sailing off Stad can be difficult even on days with little wind, because heavy waves can linger for several days after the wind has dropped. The BarentsWatch wave forecast, which MET Norway links to for coastal fairways, shows wave heights along the whole Norwegian coast, including significant and maximum wave heights and crossing waves in the fairways.
Tip
If you are prone to seasickness and travel by ship along the west coast, find out when the ship passes Stad and check the wave forecast for that day.
