Is wild camping allowed in Lofoten?
The right to roam in Lofoten and the regional tent bans.
Short answer
Wild camping is allowed in most of Lofoten, but the regional outdoor regulation bans tents in 14 areas, most of them from 1 May to 1 October. Elsewhere, camp on uncultivated land at least 150 metres from inhabited houses or cabins, and ask the landowner before staying more than two nights.
Why
- The Friluftsforskrift for Lofoten, adopted by all six Lofoten municipalities and in force since 22 June 2021, bans tents from 1 May to 1 October at nine places in Moskenes, including Reinebringen and Reine, and three in Vågan, including parts of Kalle and Rørvika.
- In Vestvågøy, the regulation bans tents all year in a mapped area at Haukland, and Lofoten Friluftsråd says several of the restricted areas have set-aside tent zones where camping is still possible.
- The regulation also bans parking campervans and caravans between midnight and 6 am at Stranda under fjellet, Kalle, Rørvika and along Lille Kongsvatn in Vågan.
Details
Where tent zones have been set aside, you may camp only inside them. In some areas camping is allowed only for a fee and on terms approved by the municipality. The national campfire ban applies from 15 April to 15 September, and fires on bare rock slabs are not allowed in Lofoten. Breaking the regulation can be reported to the police.
Tip
Before you pitch your tent, check the tourist map from Lofoten Friluftsråd and Destination Lofoten, which shows the tent bans and access restrictions.
What may differ
The list of areas can change: Visit Lofoten describes the regulation as a document that is not static. Nature reserves and national parks also have their own protection rules.
Common misconception
Under the right to roam you can camp anywhere you like in Lofoten.
What actually happens
The right to roam has limits: the Friluftsforskrift for Lofoten bans tents in 14 areas, and elsewhere you camp on uncultivated land at least 150 metres from inhabited houses or cabins.
