Does the sun set in Oslo in summer?

Sunset times, light nights and where to see the midnight sun.

Short answer

Yes, the sun sets in Oslo every day of the year, even at midsummer, because the city lies south of the Arctic Circle and has no midnight sun. On 21 June 2026 it sets at 22:43 and rises at 03:53, and the sky does not get fully dark in between.

When to see the midnight sun in Norway a round calendar wheel with four seasons shown as a snowflake, a leaf, a sun and a raindrop around a small mountain

Why

  1. MET's sunrise data give sunrise at 03:53 and sunset at 22:43 in Oslo on 21 June 2026.
  2. At solar midnight on 21 June 2026 the sun is only 6.65 degrees below the horizon, so the night stays in twilight rather than full darkness.
  3. Visit Norway lists midnight sun periods only north of the Arctic Circle, for example from 4 June to 8 July in Bodø and from 20 May to 22 July in Tromsø.

Details

The light nights fade during July: on 31 July 2026 the sun sets at 21:49 and rises at 04:55, and at solar midnight it is 11.78 degrees below the horizon. Winter is the opposite, and on 21 December 2026 the sun is up only from 09:18 to 15:12.

Tip

For the lightest nights in Oslo, visit around midsummer; to see the sun at midnight, travel north of the Arctic Circle, for example to Bodø or Tromsø.

What may differ

North of the Arctic Circle the sun does not set at all in early summer: Visit Norway gives 12 June to 1 July at the Arctic Circle itself and 14 May to 29 July at the North Cape.

Common misconception

Oslo has the midnight sun in summer.

What actually happens

Oslo has light summer nights, but the sun sets every day. The midnight sun can only be seen north of the Arctic Circle, according to Visit Norway.
