What is the weather like in Oslo?
Temperature and precipitation normals, snow and daylight in the capital.
Short answer
Oslo has cold, often snowy winters and warm summers, with normal temperatures of −2 °C in January and 18 °C in July at the Blindern weather station. The exact 1991–2020 normals are −2.3 °C and 17.7 °C. August is the wettest month, with 103 mm of precipitation, and the year totals 837 mm.
Why
- Since 2021 the Norwegian Meteorological Institute has compared the weather with the 1991–2020 normal period; the Blindern figures here are the normals shown on yr.no.
- Precipitation at Blindern is lowest in early spring, with 41 mm in March, and highest in late summer and autumn, with 103 mm in August and 93 mm in October.
- Daylight varies a lot: on 21 June 2026 the sun rises at 03:53 and sets at 22:43, and on 21 December 2026 it rises at 09:18 and sets at 15:12.
Details
Visit Norway says snowfall is common around Oslo and that the average winter temperature is just below zero. In 2025 the Blindern station recorded a high of 32.9 °C on 20 July and a low of −14.2 °C on 5 January, and the snow depth peaked at 30 cm on 8 January. Spring comes quickly: the normal rises from 1.3 °C in March to 11.4 °C in May.
Tip
In winter, bring waterproof shoes with good soles for snow and ice, as Visit Norway recommends, and check the hourly forecast on yr.no before longer walks.
What may differ
Normals describe an average year, and single years can differ a lot: in 2025, July at Blindern averaged 20.7 °C, three degrees above normal, while March had only 8.7 mm of precipitation against a normal of 41 mm.
Common misconception
Oslo is as rainy as the west coast of Norway.
What actually happens
It is not. The precipitation normals add up to 837 mm a year at Oslo (Blindern) and 2,496 mm at Bergen (Florida), about three times as much.
