Do you need to book DNT cabins, and how do you get a key?
Booking rules, the DNT key and paying at self-service cabins.
Short answer
Booking is usually not required at DNT self-service and no-service cabins, although some staffed lodges and unstaffed cabins require it, and only DNT members can get the key. Members borrow the standard key against a NOK 100 deposit, refunded when it is returned. DNT says everyone who comes to a cabin will have a place to sleep.
Why
- DNT says booking is required at some staffed lodges, such as Sæteren Gård and Kobberhaughytta, and can be advisable at others for stays of more than one night.
- At many self-service and no-service cabins you can book a bed, but DNT says this is not required, apart from some unstaffed cabins listed in the area overviews.
- The standard DNT key opens hundreds of unstaffed and self-service cabins, but a few cabins in the network need a special key.
Details
You can get the key from your local DNT member association, at DNT hiking centres (Tursentre), at all staffed lodges or online at dntbutikken.no, and keep it while your membership is active. At self-service cabins you pay through the DNT Hyttebetaling app, and most staffed lodges take debit and credit cards. Check opening dates on UT.no before you go.
Tip
If you plan nights at self-service cabins, join DNT and collect the key before you set off, since it is only lent to members.
What may differ
Seasons vary: most self-service and no-service cabins are open all year, but some in mountain areas close from 15 October until mid-February or early March, and staffed lodges mainly open in summer. Members also have priority on bunks when cabins are crowded.
