When are DNT cabins open, and can you stay in them in winter?
Opening seasons for staffed, self-service and no-service cabins.
Short answer
Many DNT self-service and no-service cabins are open all year, so you can stay in them in winter, but some close in the coldest months. Most staffed lodges open from the Friday before Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday, and from late June to mid-September. Check each cabin's dates on UT.no.
Why
- DNT says self-service and no-service cabins are often open year-round, but some close in the coldest winter months or during reindeer calving in May and June.
- Most staffed lodges open on the Friday before Palm Sunday and close on Easter Sunday, then open again from late June to mid-September.
- DNT names Haukeliseter as a lodge that is open all year.
Details
Many staffed lodges have self-service quarters that stay open outside the staffed season. Unstaffed cabins are usually locked with the standard DNT key, so you need one in winter too. Some cabins also close because of wild reindeer migration or for environmental reasons.
Tip
Always check the opening dates for the exact cabin on UT.no before you set out, especially for a trip outside Easter and summer.
What may differ
Opening periods are set cabin by cabin, so two cabins in the same area can have different seasons.
