Why

  1. Utne Hotel opened in 1722, has been run as a hotel ever since and is described as Norway's oldest listed wooden hotel.
  2. Grand Hotel Oslo on Karl Johans gate opened in 1874, and Henrik Ibsen and Fridtjof Nansen were cheered by crowds from its corner balcony.
  3. Visit Norway describes De Historiske as an organisation of hotels, restaurants and historic ships, where storytelling is required for the label.

Details

Kviknes Hotel in the centre of Balestrand by the Sognefjord has been run by the same family for four generations, since Ole Kvigne took it over in 1877, and the hotel says its tradition of hospitality dates back to 1752. Hotel Union Øye lists Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands, Emperor Wilhelm II of Germany and Karen Blixen among its guests. Stalheim Hotel, between Voss and Flåm, has its own folk museum.

Tip

Check the season before you plan a stay: Stalheim, for example, opens in early May and closes after September.

What may differ

Hotel Union Øye by the Hjørundfjord is a different hotel from Hotel Union in Geiranger, which Visit Norway lists as a member of De Historiske.
