Can you stay at a hotel in Norway on your own if you are under 18?

Age limits, ID at check-in and what to ask the hotel.

Answered at: Checked at:

Short answer

Usually not: Thon and Strawberry hotels only let guests aged 18 or over check in alone, and Strawberry does not let minors stay in a room without an adult. Thon also asks all guests over 18 to show valid ID at check-in. Contact the hotel before booking if you are under 18.

Why

  1. Thon Hotels gives 18 as the minimum age for checking in without an adult.
  2. Strawberry says guests under 18 may not check in or stay in a room unless an adult is with them, and at least one person per room must be 18 or over.
  3. Since 10 June 2025, Thon Hotels has required all guests over 18 to show valid ID at check-in, such as a passport, national ID card or driving licence.

Details

Scandic refers questions about guests under 18 to its booking conditions, so read them before booking a Scandic hotel. Some hotels also have separate age limits for spas and gyms, according to Strawberry.

Tip

If a teenager travels alone, for example to a sports event, ask the hotel in writing before booking whether it accepts guests under 18 without an adult.

What may differ

Hostels and independent hotels set their own age rules, so check the terms of each place.
