What should you bring when you stay at a DNT cabin?

Bedding, food, the DNT key and what is already at the cabin.

Short answer

At most DNT cabins you need to bring a sleeping bag liner or your own bed linen, because duvets and pillows are already there. At no-service cabins you also bring all your own food, while self-service cabins have a pantry you pay for. A few simpler cabins require a sleeping bag.

Why

  1. DNT says you must bring and use either a sleeping bag liner or your own bed linen.
  2. Self-service cabins have firewood, gas, kitchen utensils and bunks with duvets or blankets and pillows, plus food such as canned goods and crispbread.
  3. No-service cabins have no food storage, so you must bring all your own food and supplies.

Details

Most cabins that are not staffed are locked with the standard DNT key, which is a member benefit. Cleaning equipment and soap are provided, but at many places, including Oslomarka, you carry all your rubbish home. DNT also suggests a headlamp if you want to read in bed without disturbing others.

Tip

Pack a plastic bag for your rubbish, and download the DNT app before the trip so you can pay for pantry food without coverage.

What may differ

Staffed lodges serve breakfast and dinner, so you need less food there. At a few simpler no-service cabins you may need a sleeping bag and extra equipment, so check the cabin on UT.no before you go.

Common misconception

You have to carry a full sleeping bag to every DNT cabin.

What actually happens

Self-service and most no-service cabins have duvets or blankets and pillows, so a sleeping bag liner or bed linen is enough. Only a few simpler no-service cabins may require a sleeping bag.
