Where should I stay in Geiranger?
Hotels, camping and seasons in Geiranger.
Short answer
In Geiranger you can stay in the village centre at Union Geiranger, which is open all year, or high above the village at Hotel Utsikten by the Flydalsjuvet viewpoint. Hotel Utsikten opens only in summer, and Geiranger Camping in the centre does not take bookings, so check opening dates outside the main season.
Why
- Union Geiranger has 197 rooms and suites, is open all year and has been run by the Mjelva family since it was built in 1891.
- Fjord Norway also lists Havila Hotel Geiranger, Grande Fjord Hotel, Kilsti Compact Lodge, DNT Danskehytta and Westerås Gard as places to stay in Geiranger.
- Geiranger Camping in the centre lists an opening period from 27 April to 11 October and states that pitches cannot be booked.
Details
Hotel Utsikten has 29 rooms, first opened in 1893 and is now part of Classic Norway Hotels. Grande Fjord Hotel is a four-star boutique hotel by the Geirangerfjord with 46 rooms, and it lists spring and summer as its seasons. The ferry between Geiranger and Hellesylt runs all year apart from a short break in December and January, and Fjord Norway advises booking ahead in summer.
Tip
In summer, book your room early, and if you arrive by car via Hellesylt, book the ferry as well.
What may differ
In winter the choice is smaller: Hotel Utsikten is a summer hotel, Grande Fjord Hotel is open in spring and summer, Geiranger Camping closes in October and the road up to Dalsnibba is closed. Union Geiranger is open all year.
