Where should I stay in Lofoten?

Town or fishing village, and how transport affects the choice.

Short answer

Svolvær is the most practical base in Lofoten as the largest town with an airport, while fishing villages such as Henningsvær and Reine suit a rorbu stay. Leknes also has an airport with flights from Bodø, and the ferry from Bodø to Moskenes takes about 3.5 hours.

Why

  1. Visit Lofoten describes Svolvær as the biggest town in Lofoten, with restaurants, shops and many activities.
  2. Rorbu cabins, the old fishermen's cabins by the shore, are found in Svolvær, Kabelvåg, Henningsvær, Stamsund, Ballstad, Nusfjord, Reine, Hamnøy and Sørvågen.
  3. Widerøe has several daily flights from Bodø to both Svolvær and Leknes, while Harstad/Narvik Airport Evenes, 170 km from Svolvær, has direct flights from Oslo.

Details

Lofoten has hotels, rorbu cabins, campsites, cabins and apartments, and Visit Lofoten marks environmentally certified places with the Travel green symbol. Visit Lofoten calls Henningsvær perhaps the most famous fishing village in Norway and Reine one of the most photographed. The express boat from Bodø goes to Svolvær, and coastal ships from Hurtigruten and Havila call at Stamsund and Svolvær.

Tip

Without a car, stay where you arrive: Svolvær has both an airport and the express boat from Bodø, so you need no extra transfer.

What may differ

Families and groups may prefer a cabin or apartment with its own kitchen, which Visit Lofoten suggests for the whole family or a group of friends.
