Where should I stay in Stavanger?
City centre, Sola airport and Preikestolen compared.
Short answer
In Stavanger the city centre around the Vågen harbour is the practical base, close to Old Stavanger, Øvre Holmegate and boats to Ryfylke. For Preikestolen, Preikestolen Basecamp is 30 minutes from Stavanger, and Clarion Hotel Air is a 10-minute walk from the airport terminal in Sola.
Why
- Old Stavanger, on the west side of Vågen in the city centre, comprises 173 wooden buildings, according to Region Stavanger.
- Kolumbus runs daily bus services, route 100, from Stavanger to Jørpeland on the way to Preikestolen.
- The hike to Preikestolen is 8 kilometres in total, and the round trip usually takes four hours.
Details
Region Stavanger calls Øvre Holmegate, also known as Fargegaten, one of the most colourful streets in Norway. Speed boats leave the city centre for the islands and mainland of Ryfylke several times a day. Preikestolen Basecamp includes Preikestolen Fjellstue, a mountain lodge with a restaurant, and Preikestolen Camping is five minutes' drive from Basecamp.
Tip
For an early start on the Preikestolen hike, spend the night at Preikestolen Basecamp. For a longer stay, the centre is closer to restaurants and boats.
What may differ
By car, you drive the subsea tunnel to Solbakk and follow the signs to Preikestolen, and parking there has a fee. Without a car, the centre is simpler, since the bus to Jørpeland and the boats to Ryfylke leave from Stavanger.
