Where should I stay to see the Norwegian fjords?
Six fjord villages in four fjord areas and what each is known for.
Short answer
Bases for seeing the fjords include Flåm for the Nærøyfjord, Geiranger for the Geirangerfjord, Balestrand on the Sognefjord, Loen in Nordfjord, and Odda or Ulvik in Hardanger. All have places to stay, but some hotels and roads are seasonal, so check opening dates if you travel outside summer.
Why
- Flåm lies at the end of the Aurlandsfjord, an arm of the Sognefjord, and boats run from Flåm to Gudvangen through the Nærøyfjord, which is on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
- Loen lies at the innermost end of the Nordfjord, and Loen Skylift takes you from the fjord to the top of Hoven, 1,011 metres above sea level, in five minutes.
- In Hardanger, Brakanes Hotel sits at the edge of the fjord in Ulvik, and Odda has places to stay with views over the Sørfjorden, such as the Woodnest treehouses.
Details
Fjord Norway calls Balestrand the artists' village on the Sognefjord and describes Kviknes Hotel there as one of the most traditional hotels in Norway. The Geirangerfjord has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2005, and Fjord Norway lists hotels in Geiranger such as Union Geiranger, Havila Hotel Geiranger and Grande Fjord Hotel. In Loen, Fjord Norway names Hotel Alexandra and Hotel Loenfjord.
Tip
Book early for summer, and if you drive to Geiranger via Hellesylt, book the ferry too, as Fjord Norway advises booking ahead in summer.
What may differ
In winter fewer services run in Geiranger: the road up to Dalsnibba is closed and the ferry to Hellesylt takes a short break in December and January. Loen has winter activities on Hoven, such as snowshoe trips and Norway's longest toboggan run.
