Are there 24-hour shops or kiosks in Norway?
Unmanned shops, petrol stations and the rules for late and Sunday opening.
Short answer
Norway has some round-the-clock shops, mainly unmanned grocery shops that you unlock with a mobile app, because there is no law limiting weekday opening hours. Entry is often by app and BankID, the Norwegian electronic ID. On Sundays only grocery shops of up to 100 m² and petrol stations of up to 150 m² may open.
Why
- Norway's opening hours act was repealed on 1 April 2003, so there is no longer a law on weekday opening hours.
- Store norske leksikon describes unmanned grocery shops as often open around the clock: customers identify themselves through a mobile app, often with BankID, and pay at self-service tills.
- The first unmanned grocery shop was opened by Coop's Extra chain in Bogstadveien in Oslo, and NorgesGruppen's Joker and Nærbutikken have followed.
Details
Unmanned shops may be staffed during the day to restock shelves. For food late in the evening, Circle K runs 462 stations in Norway, and its 241 staffed stations sell coffee and food, but check the opening hours of each station.
Tip
Use Circle K's station search to find the nearest staffed station and check its opening hours before you set off.
What may differ
Shops in areas that the county governor has approved as typical tourist places may also open on Sundays.
