Where can I return a whole bag of bottles at once in Norway?

Multi-feed machines, where they are and how they work.

Short answer

You can empty a whole bag at once into multi-feed reverse vending machines such as the TOMRA R1, which some larger supermarkets have, among them Obs Lillestrøm. TOMRA says the R1 takes more than 100 bottles and cans in one go. Neither TOMRA nor Infinitum lists the locations online, so ask your local store.

How does waste sorting and pant work in Norway? a water bottle being filled at a public tap, a locker and a small clock showing opening hours

Why

  1. TOMRA's Norwegian product page says the TOMRA R1 lets you return a whole bag of bottles and cans by pouring it in, up to five times faster than traditional machines.
  2. In a customer story from February 2023, TOMRA wrote that Obs Lillestrøm, a Coop hypermarket in the Oslo region, took part in a pilot for the R1 in 2018 and reached record return volumes four years in a row.
  3. Infinitum, which runs the deposit system, says you can return bottles and cans at stores with reverse vending machines and at other authorised collection points.

Details

In a multi-feed machine you open the lid, empty all the containers into the opening, close the lid and wait while they are counted, then take the receipt to the till. Only bottles and cans with the Norwegian deposit label give money back, and you get either a receipt for the shop or a payout in the app. Infinitum says most grocery stores accept the most common deposit bottles and cans, but in ordinary machines you feed them in one at a time.

Tip

Before you carry several bags to a shop, ask staff at a large supermarket near you whether it has a machine that takes a whole bag.

What may differ

Swedish drinks registered in the deposit system are accepted in Norway, but no deposit is paid for them.
