Are public toilets free in Norway?

When you pay for a public toilet, and how to find one nearby.

Short answer

Not all public toilets in Norway are free: most toilets on Bergen's official toilet map cost nothing, but the staffed toilets at Oslo Central Station cost NOK 20. Where a Bergen toilet charges, the city's map shows the price, such as NOK 10 at Gartnerboligen. Oslo, Bergen and Stavanger publish maps or lists of public toilets.

Why

  1. The City of Bergen writes that most of the toilets in its overview are free to use, and that the three toilets at Gartnerboligen in Thormøhlens gate 40 are open around the clock and cost NOK 10.
  2. Vy writes that the toilets at Oslo Central Station are staffed and cost NOK 20, payable by card or cash.
  3. Visit Oslo links to a City of Oslo map of public toilets, and Stavanger kommune publishes open data with the location, opening hours, prices and accessibility of its public toilets.

Details

Opening hours vary: in Bergen, the public toilets in Skur 8 on Bryggen are open from 08:00 to 23:00, and the seven toilets at Strandkaiterminalen from 07:00 to 23:00. Bergen's map also shows which toilets have an accessible toilet and a baby changing room. On the road, Circle K's station search lets you filter for stations with toilets.

Tip

In Bergen, look for the WC sign with a troll: it marks toilets that are open to the public and free of charge.
