How much is the deposit on bottles and cans in Norway?
Deposit rates, what you can return and where.
Short answer
The deposit in Norway is NOK 2 on small bottles and cans and NOK 3 on large bottles. The amount is printed in the PANT symbol on the label. Infinitum, which runs the deposit system, defines small as under 1 litre and large as over 1 litre. You get the money back at the shop's reverse vending machine.
Why
- Infinitum lists the deposit as NOK 2 for bottles and cans under 1 litre and NOK 3 for bottles over 1 litre.
- The rates were raised in 2018 for the first time in 25 years, from 1 krone and 2.50 kroner to 2 and 3 kroner, Teknisk Ukeblad reported.
- Infinitum reports a deposit return rate of 93 per cent for 2025.
Details
You can return plastic drink bottles and drink cans with the deposit symbol, including slightly dented ones as long as the barcode can be read. Glass bottles, milk cartons, food cans and bottles larger than 3 litres are not part of the system. Imported drinks count only if they carry a Norwegian deposit label.
Tip
Keep bottles and cans whole and the labels intact, because the machine has to read the barcode.
