Short answer

On Sundays in Oslo you can buy groceries in small shops of up to 100 m² and at petrol stations of up to 150 m², while supermarkets stay closed. Shopping centres such as Oslo City are also closed. REMA 1000 lists the opening hours of all its stores on its website, so check before you go.

Why

  1. Under the Public Holidays Act, shops must close on Sundays, but shops selling mainly groceries or kiosk goods may open if their total sales area is no more than 100 m².
  2. Petrol stations with a total sales area of up to 150 m² are also exempt, and so are restaurants and cafés, according to Store norske leksikon.
  3. Oslo City shopping centre is open 10:00–22:00 on weekdays and 10:00–20:00 on Saturdays, and closed on Sundays.

Details

A Sunday shop is usually a small neighbourhood store, so the range is smaller than in a supermarket. Beer is not sold in shops on Sundays: Visit Norway notes that supermarkets sell beer only before 20:00 on weekdays and 18:00 on Saturdays, and Visit Oslo says alcohol on Sundays is served only in bars and restaurants.

Tip

Look up the nearest store's hours online before you walk there: REMA 1000 lists hours for all its stores, and Joker has a store finder on its website.

What may differ

Before Christmas, shops may open from 14:00 to 20:00 on the last three Sundays before Christmas Eve, so larger supermarkets can be open then too.
