Which supermarket chains are there in Norway, and which is the cheapest?

The four grocery groups, their chains and the low-price stores.

Short answer

For the lowest prices, look to the low-price chains Kiwi, Rema 1000 and Extra, which are owned by the grocery groups NorgesGruppen, Rema and Coop. Low-price stores dominate the market, and Kiwi overtook Rema 1000 as the largest low-price chain in 2023. NorgesGruppen also runs Meny, Spar and Joker, and Coop runs Coop Mega, Coop Prix and Obs.

Why

  1. In 2024 NorgesGruppen had 43.5 percent of the grocery market, Coop 29.2 percent, Rema 23.9 percent and Bunnpris 3.3 percent, according to Konkurransetilsynet.
  2. Konkurransetilsynet writes that the low-price segment dominates the market and that Extra has grown the most among the low-price chains, partly because Prix stores have been converted to Extra.
  3. NorgesGruppen lists Kiwi, Meny, Spar, Joker and Nærbutikken among its brands, while Coop lists Coop Mega, Coop Prix, Coop Marked, Extra and Obs as its chains.

Details

Coop says it has more than 1,200 stores across Norway and is owned by over 2.6 million members through 58 cooperatives. NorgesGruppen runs the Trumf loyalty programme. Konkurransetilsynet's market figures cover physical shops only, not online grocery sales.

Tip

Compare the prices of the items you buy most often in two or three chains near where you stay before you decide where to do your main shopping.

What may differ

Konkurransetilsynet has found that local competition differs from area to area, so the chains you can choose between depend on where you are.
