What are normal shop opening hours in Norway?
Weekdays, Saturdays, Sundays and holiday eves.
Short answer
Norwegian shops are open Monday to Saturday and mostly closed on Sundays, and big shopping centres such as Oslo City are open 10:00–22:00 on weekdays. Saturday hours are shorter, for example 10:00–20:00 at Oslo City. Supermarkets can stay open longer, some until 23:00.
Why
- Norway has had no statutory rules on weekday opening hours since the Opening Hours Act was repealed on 1 April 2003, according to Store norske leksikon.
- Under the Public Holidays Act (helligdagsfredloven), shops must close on Sundays and public holidays, with exceptions such as grocery shops of up to 100 m², petrol stations of up to 150 m² and shops in designated tourist places.
- On Christmas Eve, Easter Saturday and Whitsun Eve, the same shops must close at 16:00.
Details
Thon Senter Bergen, formerly Bergen Storsenter, is open 09:00–21:00 on weekdays and 09:00–18:00 on Saturdays, and some of its shops keep their own hours: Extra opened at 07:00 and Meny at 06:00, and both closed at 23:00 on a weekday in October 2026. Supermarkets sell beer only before 20:00 on weekdays and 18:00 on Saturdays.
Tip
Check the opening hours of the exact shop on the centre's or chain's website, since hours differ between centres and between shops in the same centre.
What may differ
Some shops may open on Sundays: small grocery shops, petrol stations, shops selling mainly flowers and garden goods, and shops in places the county governor has designated as typical tourist places. Before Christmas, shops may also open from 14:00 to 20:00 on the last three Sundays before Christmas Eve.
