Are shops open on 1 May and 17 May in Norway?

What is open and closed on Labour Day and Constitution Day.

Answered at: Checked at:

Short answer

Most shops in Norway are closed on 1 May and 17 May, because the closing rules for Sundays and public holidays also apply on these two days. Small grocery shops of up to 100 m², petrol stations, restaurants and cafés may still open. Shops cannot sell beer or other alcohol on these days.

May holidays in Norway: what is open a water bottle being filled at a public tap, a locker and a small clock showing opening hours

Why

  1. Store norske leksikon notes that the rules of the Public Holidays Act apply in the same way to 1 May and 17 May, so shops selling to consumers must stay closed.
  2. The exceptions are the same as on Sundays: grocery shops of up to 100 m², petrol stations of up to 150 m², restaurants and cafés, and shops in approved tourist areas.
  3. Visit Norway lists Labour Day (1 May) and Constitution Day (17 May) among Norway's public holidays and says that most shops close and public transport may run less often.

Details

Visit Norway writes that many restaurants and bars are open on public holidays, apart from Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day. In Oslo, most museums open on public holidays, but Visit Oslo notes that MUNCH is closed on 1 May and The Viking Planet on 17 May. Alcohol can only be bought in bars and restaurants for drinking on site.

Tip

Buy food and drinks the day before, and remember that supermarkets stop selling beer at 20:00 on weekdays and 18:00 on Saturdays.

What may differ

Shops in areas that the county governor has approved as typical tourist places may open, so a few shops in tourist spots can have different hours.
