Are there toilets on trains, ferries and along hiking routes in Norway?

Where to find a toilet on the train, on the ferry and before a hike.

Short answer

Night trains, long-distance trains and ferries in Norway have toilets on board, while on popular hikes such as Preikestolen the toilets are at the car park. On SJ's night trains they are at each end of the sleeping carriage, and Norled lists toilets, including accessible ones, on both a car ferry and an express boat.

Why

  1. SJ Nord, which runs the night trains on the Dovre and Nordland lines, says the toilets are at each end of the sleeping carriage and that the tap water in the compartments is not drinkable.
  2. Norled's product sheets list ladies', gents' and accessible toilets on the ferry MF Kvernsund and on the passenger catamaran MS Frøya.
  3. Fjord Norway says there is a service building with toilets at the Preikestolen car park, and that you cannot refill your water bottle along the trail.

Details

A 2024 report from the Norwegian Railway Directorate and Norske tog on the new long-distance trains adds an extra accessible toilet with a baby changing table, and criticises the poor marking of toilets on today's trains. The Preikestolen hike is 4 km each way, and Fjord Norway suggests allowing about 2 hours each way.

Tip

Use the toilet at the car park before a long hike, and fill your water bottle before you set off, as you cannot refill it along the Preikestolen trail.
