Short answer

On Sundays most shops in Oslo are closed by law, but small grocery shops, petrol stations, restaurants, cafés and most museums can stay open. Large shopping centres such as Oslo City are closed. You cannot buy alcohol in shops on Sundays, only in bars and restaurants for drinking there.

When shops and Vinmonopolet are open a water bottle being filled at a public tap, a locker and a small clock showing opening hours

Why

  1. Under the Public Holidays Act, shops must close on Sundays, but grocery shops of up to 100 m², petrol stations of up to 150 m², restaurants and cafés, and shops in designated tourist places are exempt.
  2. Visit Oslo writes that most museums are open on Sundays and names the Fram Museum, the Kon-Tiki Museum, MUNCH and the Holmenkollen Ski Museum among those open almost every day of the year.
  3. Visit Oslo notes that on Sundays and public holidays alcohol can only be bought at a bar or restaurant for drinking on site.

Details

Oslo City is open Monday to Saturday and closed on Sundays, and the Oslo Visitor Centre is also closed on Sundays in October, November and December. Some museums close on Mondays instead, so check opening times before you plan the week.

Tip

Do your shopping on Saturday: supermarkets stop selling beer at 18:00 on Saturdays and do not sell it at all on Sundays.

What may differ

Before Christmas, shops may open from 14:00 to 20:00 on the last three Sundays before Christmas Eve. On public holidays the same closing rules apply as on Sundays, and Visit Oslo notes that many restaurants also close on major holidays.
