How does public transport in Bergen work?

Buses, Bybanen, the Skyss app, ticket prices and paying on board.

Short answer

Bergen's buses, Bybanen light rail and local boats are organised by Skyss, and the Skyss app plans trips and sells tickets for all of them. A single ticket for one zone costs NOK 51 for adults, and a 24-hour ticket NOK 136. Bybanen runs to Bergen Airport, but tickets are not sold on board.

Why

  1. From 9 March 2026 the Skyss app replaced the Skyss Travel app, and in it you can plan journeys by bus, Bybanen, boat, ferry and train in Vestland and buy tickets.
  2. Skyss prices from 1 May 2026 are NOK 51 for an adult single ticket and NOK 136 for a 24-hour ticket in one zone, while children pay NOK 26 and NOK 68.
  3. On Skyss buses you can buy a single or 24-hour ticket on board, but Bybanen has no ticket sales on board.

Details

On the bus you can pay in cash or with a Visa, Mastercard or Maestro card. Children under 6 travel free, and the child fare covers ages 6–17. Besides the app, Skyss sells tickets in a webshop, from ticket machines and at a customer service centre.

Tip

Install the Skyss app before you land, so you can buy a ticket for Bybanen at the airport, since the light rail does not sell tickets on board.

What may differ

Express buses, the airport express coach and some boat routes have their own prices outside the ordinary zone fares.
