How do Oslo City Bikes (Oslo Bysykkel) work?

The app, passes and prices, returning bikes and winter use.

Answered at: Checked at:

Short answer

Oslo Bysykkel works through its app: you register, buy a pass, unlock a bike at a station and return it to a station with a free lock. Discover Oslo costs NOK 119 for three days with rides of up to three hours, or you can pay as you go. The system is open all year, with fewer bikes in winter.

Why

  1. Oslo Bysykkel has 3,000 bikes, both manual and electric, which you find and unlock in the app.
  2. Pay As You Go costs NOK 3 to register, then NOK 8 to unlock and NOK 1 a minute on a manual bike or NOK 2 on an e-bike, for rides of up to 180 minutes.
  3. The 30-day pass costs NOK 179 and the 365-day pass NOK 599, and both include the first 60 minutes of each manual bike ride.

Details

With Discover Oslo, the 72-hour period starts when you unlock your first bike, and manual bike rides of up to 180 minutes are included, with NOK 15 per 15 minutes after that. E-bikes cost extra on the Discover and 30-day passes: NOK 8 to unlock, then NOK 1.90 a minute for the first 15 minutes and NOK 1 a minute after that. When you return a bike, wait for the confirmation in the app before you leave.

Tip

Before you set off, check in the app that there are free locks at the station where you plan to return the bike.

What may differ

In the winter season there are fewer bikes than usual and fewer with studded tyres, so you may need to walk further to find one.
