At what age do children have to pay on buses in Norway?

Age limits, child fares and family discounts in the big cities.

Short answer

Children in Norway start paying on buses at age 6 with the big city operators Ruter, Skyss and AtB, and children under 6 travel free. From 6 to 17 they pay a reduced child fare, such as NOK 19 for a single ticket in Oslo instead of NOK 46. From 18 the adult fare applies.

Why

  1. Ruter in Oslo and Akershus sets the child age at 6–17 and lets all children under 6 travel free.
  2. Skyss in Vestland applies the child ticket from age 6 up to and including 17, at about half the adult price, and children under 6 travel free.
  3. AtB in Trøndelag gives children aged 6–17 a 50% discount on single tickets, and children under 6 travel free.

Details

In Bergen a child single ticket for one zone costs NOK 26 against NOK 51 for adults, at Skyss prices from 1 May 2026. AtB has a weekend family discount: anyone aged 18 or over can bring up to four children under 18 free on buses or trams within one ticket zone. At AtB, young people must change to another ticket type themselves when they turn 18.

Tip

If you travel as a family in Trondheim at the weekend, check AtB's family discount before you buy child tickets, since up to four children can ride free with one adult ticket.

What may differ

Other regional operators set their own rules, and youth tickets differ: Skyss recommends a 30-day youth ticket for ages 16–20, while AtB sells youth tickets for ages 16–19.
