Can I take my dog on buses and trams in Norway?

Tickets, leads and seats for dogs on local transport.

Answered at: Checked at:

Short answer

Dogs may travel free of charge on Ruter's buses, trams and metro in Oslo, and Skyss in the Bergen region also lets animals ride free. On Ruter, keep the dog on a lead, off the seats and out of the way of other passengers. Trains have their own rules, so check the train company.

Why

  1. Ruter states that dogs and guide dogs travel free on its services.
  2. Ruter's rules say dogs must be kept on a lead, must not block free passage and must sit on the floor or on your lap, not directly on a seat.
  3. Skyss's fare regulations, valid from 1 July 2026, say animals travel free of charge and that separate rules apply on trains.

Details

On Ruter you must make sure the dog does not bother other passengers, and you are liable for any harm it causes. Ruter refers to Vy for dogs on trains, and AtB says that SJ NORD's terms and prices apply to dogs on trains in Trondheim's zone A.

Tip

Pick a quiet spot near the door and keep a small dog on your lap, so it does not take a seat or block the aisle.

What may differ

Each county's transport company sets its own rules, so check the local company outside Oslo and Bergen before you travel with a dog.

Common misconception

A dog needs its own ticket on the bus.

What actually happens

Not with Ruter or Skyss, where dogs travel free. On trains, the train company's rules and prices apply.
