Do electric cars park for free in Oslo?
Parking fees, charging prices and the rules at city chargers.
Short answer
Electric cars do not park for free in Oslo, as the City of Oslo charges them for municipal parking, although several tariff groups give them a lower rate. At city charging points you always pay for electricity, and from 09:00 to 20:00 Monday to Saturday you also pay a parking fee where the sign shows one.
Why
- The City of Oslo states that you must also pay to park an electric car in municipal parking spaces.
- Under the city's 2026 rates, street parking between Ring 1 and Ring 3 costs an electric car NOK 36 for the first hour, against NOK 71 for other cars.
- At municipal chargers, electricity costs the daily average spot price plus a fixed surcharge of NOK 0.81 per kWh in 2026, and parking in the inner city costs NOK 12 an hour for the first five hours.
Details
All payment for municipal charging goes through the Bil i Oslo app, and you cannot pay for charging at a parking machine. To park legally in a charging space, the car must be electric and plugged in the whole time. There is no maximum time while the charging session is active, but the app ends sessions automatically after four weeks.
Tip
Charge in the evening, on a Sunday or on a public holiday: at the city's charging points you then pay only for the electricity.
What may differ
In tariff zone 3062, reserved charging spaces, there is no parking fee, only the price of power. At fast and semi-fast chargers run by private operators, you may not charge longer than the maximum time on the signs.
